History

The Hulsey Foundation owes its genesis to an endowment donated in 1985 to Southern Adventist University to promote entrepreneurial and ethical leadership training in honor of Ruth McKee, co-founder of the McKee Baking Co. In some senses however, it could be said that the Hulsey Foundations genesis really goes back even further in time. In the 1920s, a successful businessman and baker, Mr. Dortch, exemplified Hulsey Foundation members today (by donating his time to travel from Birmingham, Alabama to the campus of Southern Junior College, then a day’s trip one way), to offer his services free of charge by teaching an evening class on business and business ethics. O.D. McKee was one of his pupils.

Today, The Hulsey Foundation owes its existence to the belief that there are many who will embody that same spirit, that there rests a huge resource for good in those who are to be the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders with a purpose and vision to leverage their inventive genius, willingness to risk and resolve for the benefit of themselves and others.
